Silver Unicorn

Two years ago, when I started making jewelry, I made a brass unicorn pendant meant to be a reference to the origami unicorn in Blade Runner. I wasn’t until later that I started working with silver.

I was then able to make it in the metal that more accurately resembles the metallic paper used in the movie.

While I was making the flat silver unicorn pendant, I considered that I could make it three-dimensional – like the origami crane.  And so this silver unicorn was born.

The idea for this work came from the fact that I have no knowledge of who my neighbours are, apart from what I can infer from their early morning arguments. My ineptitude when it comes to speaking Korean, further amplifies this inability to fully understand by surroundings completely. I’m isolated in my apartment by my lack of knowledge. And even when I try to imagine who the people are that I share my walls with, I am limited by my own experience, imagination and understanding of life. My understanding of the world limits me. How we judge other people, or situations, speak more about us than it does about them. These limits extend to my own identity and relationships with other people, as these things are bound by my own perspective. We all are.

White Rose

I only get three hours a week in studio/class to work on my jewelry. Normally I plan what I want to make, sometimes down to the steps I want to follow – a mise en place of sorts. Often this results in me having time left to make something simple/quick towards the end of class. This is another of the “I have time left to make something” pieces.

Fur Elise

Choosing gifts for people is sometimes tricky. Knowing what they like or absolutely adore helps. A friend is leaving Korea tomorrow, and I wanted to make her a custom gift. This time, choosing a gift was easy, because I knew what/who she loved more than anything.

I underestimated how long it would take to make – the canvas is only 190 x 190mm. In the end I got through Season one and two of Fargo. I enjoyed both embroidering the cat and watching Fargo – especially season two.

A Gothic Romance

My high school art teacher had a wedding ring that I remember till this day. While I don’t remember exact decorative details, I do remember it had a red heart-shaped stone with a silver dagger apparently piercing it. Back then, I thought it was very romantic.

A friend of mine recently got engaged, and her ring featured a similar motif – it didn’t have a stone though. None the less it sparked the fire of inspiration. I set out looking for a red heart-shaped stone – something I didn’t expect to be as tedious as it turned out to be. After checking several shops, I settled on what I think is a red Zirconia. I don’t really care, just wanted to make this ring. I’m pretty proud of my first attempt at setting a faceted gemstone.

Gothic Romance 3

I didn’t use wax or any casting methods to make this ring. It was built up from scratch. The heart and dagger motif has an interesting history – at least in tattoo design. You can read more about that here and here. I learned later that my friends ring (that unlocked a memory and set this whole process in motion) is actually a Claddagh ring.

Because I’m very happy with how it turned out, I’m sharing more photos than usual.

Girl in Sweater II

This is the second of three pieces I plan on showing at the Daejeon Arts Collective‘s 8th group exhibition in November. Three weeks to go and one piece left to embroider. I’m watching Gotham season 1 while I stitch, so I should be up to date by the time I finish the final piece.

Girl with Sweater 2

A friend mentioned that the girl resembles the Canadian ‘record producer, artist, musician, singer, songwriter and music video director’ named Grimes. I had to Google who that was, but I see it. She can be whoever you want her to be.
