It has been 10 years since I started my final year of high school. Having been head girl back then, I assumed responsibility for organising the reunion. Our school is named after Jan van Riebeeck. Regardless of what this “gentleman” stood for, or the effects his coming here has had on South Africa, my Alma mater is a remarkable place that I still love. As Shakespeare so eloquently put it:
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.
I decided to use blue delft as a kind of theme for the reunion – inspired by van Riebeeck’s Dutch heritage. (The delft at Babylonstoren might also have played a big role in the inspiration process.) We were going to have a gourmet braai (BBQ), so I made these delft blue “Jan van Riebeeck braai” place mats.
